Byeong-heon Lee,who is known as the last Yijing scholar on the Korean Peninsula in the academic community, accepted the viewpoint of New Text Confucianism that there were no scripture before Confucius which could be called classic, and denied the traditional view that the Yijing was coauthored by the three sages. He contended that Yi zhuan(Commentaries on the Changes, the Ten Wings)was written by Confucius. He be⁃lieved that Confucius was the only author of the Yijing which is a“divine scripture”and the order of the 64 hexagrams and the method of divination were both determined by Confucius.Based on the premise that the order of the 64 hexagrams is unchanged, and the principle that the odd and even hexagrams adjacent to each other form a“paired hexagram”,Byeong-heon Lee elaborated on the hexagram change theory of“the other hexagrams changing from Qian[■]and Kun[■]”.His general idea is:the odd hexagrams are the inner ones, followed by the even hexagrams as the outer ones, and the inner hexagrams are formed by the combination of Qian and Kun,while the outer hexagrams are transformed and reversed from the inner hexagrams.Byeong-heon Lee also used number 360 as the“middle number”and used concepts such as“middle”and“over or not enough”to distinguish and explain the 32 pairs of hexagrams.Byeong-heon Lee’s Yi scholarship not only enriched the research content and methods of modern Yi scholarship, but also made positive contributions to the development of East Asian Yijng studies.
