符号间互动视角下“语言—科学符号”在科学语篇中的经验识解

摘　　要：以往的科学语篇研究大多关注单种符号资源的意义建构,对不同符号资源之间的互动关注不够。在现有相关研究中,只有个别案例关注科学语篇中语言与图像、语言与数学符号或化学符号之间的符号隐喻,鲜有对不同符号间其他意义建构模式的系统探讨。基于O’Halloran构建的符号间互动机制分析框架,聚焦“语言—科学符号”符号混合,以机械工程英语语篇为语料,具体阐释由英语和科学符号形成的符号混合是如何识解科学经验的。研究发现,在机械工程英语中,“语言—科学符号”符号混合通过命名和分类表征机械工程领域的事物及其子类;通过多种逻辑语义关系和语义扩展,描述现象、论证观点。Previous studies on scientific discourse just focus on the meaning construction of a single semiotic resource,not paying enough attention to the interaction of different semiotic resources.Of the relevant studies,only a few cases examine the semiotic metaphor between language and image,language and mathematical symbols or chemical symbols to date,with little concern on other meaning construction modes between different semiotic resources.Drawing on the framework of Inter-semiotic Mechanisms proposed by O’Halloran,this paper,focusing on“language–scientific symbol”semiotic mixing,and taking Mechanical Engineering(hereafter ME)English discourse(textbook chapters and research articles)as corpus,explores how semiotic mixing formed by English and scientific symbols(including mathematical,physical and chemical symbols specifically)construes scientific experience.It is found that in ME English,semiotic mixing of“language–scientific symbol”represents things and their subcategories in the field of ME through naming and classification,describes phenomena and unfolds arguments through various logical semantic relationships and semantic expansion.
