English sentences with inanimate subjects (ESWIS) are a kind of common and typical sentence pattern and a unique language phenomenon in English written texts. Due to cultural and linguistic differences between English and Chinese and differences in ways of thinking between East and West, it is not easy for Chinese students to learn to use ESWIS. In the light of George Lakoff's 'conceptual metaphor' theory from the cognitive approach and M.A.K. Halliday's 'grammatical metaphor' theory from the systemic-functional approach, this paper aims at analyzing ESWIS from three perspectives: rhetorical devices, conceptual metaphor and grammatical metaphor, in an effort to discover the causes and features of ESWIS and relevant translating methods in this respect.
