Vladimir Nabokov (1899~1977), a prominent Russian-American writer of contemporary times, is celebrated worldwide for his masterpiece “Lolita”. Despite initial controversies and even being labeled a “banned book,” “Lolita” has since ascended to the ranks of world literary classics, affirming the novel’s inherent literary value and its profound influence. This paper selects Huang Jianren’s translation, the earliest domestic Chinese-to-English version of Lolita, as the primary text for analysis. Drawing upon Andrew Chesterman’s model of translation ethics, the paper employs the ethics of representation, communication, and norms as theoretical frameworks to study the translation strategies used by Huang and the translation ethics embodied in the translation, thereby further enriching the analytical perspectives of novel translations.
