Usami Rin’s Akutagawa Prize-winning work Idol Failure tells the story of the protagonist, Akari, and her dependency on the idol Ueno Maki. She regards her idol worship as a pillar of her life, even willing to sacrifice herself for it. Her fandom not only drains her time and resources but also makes her an unconscious victim of consumerism. This study analyzes Akari’s “idol dependency” behavior to explore its metaphorical implications and interpret it from a consumer culture perspective. Through literary analysis, this research reveals the operational mechanisms of idol culture and its symbolic representations within the capitalist consumer system, highlighting how individual pursuits are transformed into a hollow and endless cycle of consumption. This study will examine idol symbols and their oppression of personal will from a literary perspective, ultimately revealing the inherent emptiness of capitalism.
