摘 要:Critical linguists maintain that all language use is ideologically motivated. Therefore, it follows that translation, as a form of language use, is also ideologically motivated. In fact, ideological manipulation in the process of translation has long since been observed by researchers of translation studies. Nevertheless, it isn’t until the 1980s that some western researchers began to make a systematic research into the ideological interference in translation and take a serious look at the relationships between power, ideology and translation. One of the most influential figures and pioneers is André Lefevere who puts forward his theory of translation as “rewriting”. According to Lefevere, the people involved in power positions are “rewriting” literature and the motivation underlying such rewriting can be ideological. In other words, the translator’s ideology or the ideology imposed on the translator by patronage and the dominant poetics in the target language culture determines the translation strategies and the solution to specific problems. It needs noting that Andre Lefevere puts emphasis on the influence exerted by the ideology in the target language culture on the translator. In the rendition of Jia (The Family) written by Pa Chin, the influence of ideology did exist, but it was exerted by the ideology in the source language culture on Pa Chin, not straightly on the translator. This thesis aims to supplement and better Andre Lefevere’s theory on ideology while testing the validity and applicability of it.
