摘　　要：评判实际翻译的质量,基于三个主要因素:翻译的目的、对象和语篇类型.对<天演论>的批评欠客观,在于忽视了严复的翻译目的与对象.刻意模仿先秦文体,符合他的翻译对象与目的.<天演论>的成功说明这是最适合的做法.如果依据雅字的古义解释成要求译文语言规范,那么信达雅作为一般的翻译标准还是比较理想的表述.The three main factors that decide the judgement of the quality of a translation are the purpose of translating, the receptors and type of the text to be translated. The criticism against Yan Fu's style failed to take full account of Yan Fu's purpose and the nature of the receptors. His great success proved that his style was suitable. If we see “elegant”, according to its ancient meaning, as normalizing the translating language, “faithful, smooth, and elegant” are acceptable as the general standard of translation.
