Inconstancy of life is the constant theme in Chinese and Japanese literary classics. Inconstancy is the cause of disaster, which results in separation and death. As to the origin of inconstancy and attitudes towards it, there are different ideas in Chinese and Japanese literary classics. In the former, the origin of the inconstancy of life is explained in terms of Confucianism, whereas in the latter, it is explained in terms of Buddhism, believing that disasters are caused by the inconstant world. With regard to "life and death", ancient Chinese writers "care more about life", whereas Japanese writers "worship death".
