摘　　要：形合与意合是语言共有的话语活动,是英汉两种语言之间的最重要的区别特征。形合与意合在句子及句子以下层面的特点是英语重形合,汉语重意合,而在句子以上(语篇)层面,形合与意合则是语用主体在实际话语活动中的语用选择,这种选择具有语境理据、文化认同理据和美学结构理据。Hypotaxis and parataxis are mutual discourse in language. They are also the most important features distinguishing the Chinese language from English. The author believes that below the sentence level,English is more hypotaxis while Chinese more parataxis,but at the level of paragraphs in both languages,hypotaxis and parataxis are the language users＇ pragmatic choices which include contextual motivation, same cultural motivation and esthetics-structural motivation.
