摘　　要：文章从杨宪益与霍克斯两种《红楼梦》英译本首回中汉语四音节词组(或四字结构)英译文分析对比入手,研究了其构词特点、在跨文化交际中的表达功能及在英译过程中翻译技巧的灵活运用。The article,started with the analysis of the two English versions of the Chinese four- character idioms or structures in the 1st chapter of A Dream of Red Mansions(or The Story of the Stone) respectively by Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes, makes a scientific and systematic study of the idioms and the optimal transformation in their interpretation and translation in cross-cultural communication so as to guarantee the best representation of their originality and working style.
