摘　　要：释名场合,是指小说中对于人物名称的来历给予解释的场合。在释名场合下,汉语人名本身的字面意义得到凸显,同时由于这些字面意义与中国文化的某个方面,小说情节发展的某个阶段发生关联,从而对译者的翻译能力提出挑战。本文以《红楼梦》的杨译本和霍译本为蓝本,分析释名场合下《红楼梦》中的人名翻译的案例,总结释名场合人名翻译有效的策略和方法,为今后翻译中对同类问题的处理提供借鉴和参考。A name-explaining occasion refers to the part of a novel that addresses the origin of a charac- ter＇ s name. On such an occasion, the literal meaning of a person＇ s name is foregrounded, which, being re- lated in one way or another to the Chinese culture and/or the novel＇ s plot itself, proves to be a challenge to the translator＇ s competence. This paper, based on the two English versions of Hong Long Meng by the Yangs and David Hawkes respectively, is a case study of the translation of people＇ s names from Chinese into English on the name-explaining occasions in Hong Lou Meng; it summarizes the strategies and methods of translation in this regard, so as to offer helpful solutions to the problem in translation.
