Editor's Commentary:Kurt Squire is a Professor in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at University of Wisconsin- Madison, and Co-Director of the Games+Learning+Society Center in the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Squire's research mainly investigates the potential of video game-based technologies for systemic change in education, and focuses on the impact of video games on learning, schooling, and society. Squire's work integrates research and theory on digital media (particularly games) with theories of situated cognition in order to understand how to design game-based learning environments from a sociocultural perspective. Squire's research includes design of video games and virtual learning environments, analysis of games and games culture, and game-based learning. His early work focused on using Civilization III as a way to teach history, and his Ph.D. dissertation entitled "Replaying History:learning world history through playing Civilization III" was one of the first video game-based dissertations in the United States. Before coming to Wisconsin, Squire was Research Manager of the Games-to-Teach Project at MIT, and Co-Director of the Education Arcade.Squire is the author or editor of three books, and over 75 scholarly publications on learning with technology. Squire has directed several game-based learning projects, for example, ARIS (Augmented Reality and Interactive Storytelling) is a tool for place-based mobile app development. Squire's research has been supported by National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, National Institute for Health, the Microsoft, the AMD Foundation, and the Gates Foundation. During this interview Professor Kurt Squire introduced the development of educational games research in the United States in last ten years, and told us in detail about the research progress and application of research methods based on their group's work, and then put forward several potential aspects in the field of educational games in the future.
