Based on 128 writing texts on the same topic from English majors of 4 grades, this study investigates Eng- lish majors' differences in the development of vocabulary and the use of lexical chunks, and their relations with the writing quality. In the study, vocabulary development is analyzed in terms of vocabulary profile, text length, number of sentences, number of words in a sentence and word length, and the use of lexical chunks is examined by extracting and comparing 3-5 word lexical chunks. The results are as follows : ( 1 ) high-frequency words are commonly over- used and low-frequency ones are underused in the texts, despite the fact that English majors' vocabulary increases with the improvement of their English proficiency; (2) pre-intermediate and intermediate learners tend to write short sentences with simple words, while advanced learners are more capable of using complicated words to write long sen- tences; (3) low-frequency words, text length, number of sentences and number of words in a sentence significantly positively correlate with the writing quality; (4) pre-intermediate and intermediate learners use repeatedly the lexical chunks from the writing prompt, while advanced learners use them far less ; (5) the frequency of lexical chunks sig- nificantly negatively correlates with the writing quality.
