Writing courses are usually compulsory and institutionalized as undergraduate courses in American universities. Based on the case study of Yale University, this paper finds that in the aspect of idea and institution, writing courses in Yale emphasize the cultivation of thinking beyond knowledge transmitting and skill training. In the aspect of curriculum and teaching, Yale creates a multi-level and small class seminar-based writing course system for writing education. In the aspect of support and service, Yale constructs a holistic support system based on "writing center" and "student publications", the former is the "helping" system, and the latter is a "selfhelp" system. According to the experiences of world-class universities, writing course might be an effective approach for the construction of world-class undergraduate education.
