The present study examined the influence of literality on the cognitive processing of English idioms by 68 Chinese senior students learning English with a cross-modal lexical priming experiment. The subjects were required to simultaneously listen to the neutral sentences containing either literal or non-literal idioms played by computer and take a lexical decision task to judge the literal sense related or metaphor related target words presented on the screen. The correct judgment and reaction time were recorded for each subject. The conclusions have been drawn as follows: (1) Literality has no significant influences on the cognitive processing of English idioms by the Chinese English learners; (2) There is no significant difference between the priming effects of literal meaning and that of metaphorical meaning of English idioms in the cognitive processing of idioms by the Chinese English learners; (3) The cognitive processing of English idioms by the Chinese English learners is affected by the representation patterns and mechanisms based on their rote memorization of English idioms. The implication of the study is that the usage- and frequency-based principle of language teaching shall be implemented and reinforced in English education context in China to facilitate the automatic representation of English idioms of Chinese English learners.
