Objective To investigate the effect of MOOC mode in undergraduate orthodontic teaching. Methods 41 undergraduate students from class of 2013 Oral Science program were set as the experimental group and were taught by MOOC combined with traditional teaching mode. Students from class of 2012 taught with traditional teaching mode were set as the control group. The teaching effectiveness of MOOC mode was evaluated by examination and questionnaire survey. Results The passing rate of the experimental group was 97.56%, and that of the control group was 95.00%, there was no significant difference between the two groups (P〉0.05). The passing rate of the experimental group was 68.29%, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (45.00%, P〈0.05). More than 90.00% of the students believed that MOOC was helpful to improve their learning autonomy, efficiency as well as comprehensive clinical work ability. Conclusion As an ancillary strategy for traditional teaching, MOOC mode benefits the improvement of orthodontics teaching quality
