A Hero Born, the first volume of Jin Yong’s Legends of the Condor Heroes, translated by Anna Holmwood is another milestone in the translation of Chinese literature, especially wuxia novels, into English. This article argues that the translator has resorted to the strategy of transcreation to make her translation more accessible to the general readership. Transcreation, a concept both related to and different from some important terms in translation studies, consists of operations at the formal as well as content levels. In her translation, Anna Holmwood has ingeniously trans-created both the form and the content and language of the original based on reader’s or market’s needs, achieving an ideal result in cross-cultural communication. Her adoption of the transcreation strategy results from the complicated and huge historical network the original creates, her own identity as an editor, a literary agent and a translator, and the difficulty of making Chinese literary works going global through translation.
