Vocabulary use proves to be crucial in efficient L2 writing. As an indispensable tool for L2 learning, dictionaries have great potential for learning autonomy in general and vocabulary learning in particular. However, current studies on the influence of dictionaries on the vocabulary use of L2 writing are rather limited and empirical studies are insufficient. This empirical study is aimed at exploring the actual impact of dictionary use on learner’s lexical performance in L2 writing. The statistic results show that dictionary use does contribute to a wider vocabulary range and a higher degree of lexical sophistication, especially the more frequent use of academic words. However, problems with the use of English inflections and derivatives are quite obvious in L2 writing. In view of this,to improve the English writing performance of Chinese EFL learners, college English teachers are encouraged to recommend their students to make full use of dictionaries in their writing practice.Moreover,dictionary-integrated vocabulary teaching in L2 writing course is also in need.Chinese English learners at an advanced level should pay more attention to the proper use of low-frequency words including the academic words. And the inflections and derivatives of academic words are worth more efforts in their L2 writing.
