“Dao being Not Far from People”in The Doctrine of the Mean and Its Related Issues

摘  要:《中庸》第十三章引孔子之言,曰“道不远人”,从平常与功用处展开论述“庸”。本着以经解经、以《庸》释《庸》的原则,“道不远人”的要义至少囊括以下几点:其一,“道”指人道;其二,从学理上看,“率性之谓道”是其依据;其三,从礼的践行看,“道不可须臾离”;其四,从实践上看,“远人”有己身与己身之外两层意义。以郑注孔疏及朱子之说为代表的经典注疏皆有所失。此章与首章相关联,揭示了为道由己、力行忠恕、推己及人的儒家教化哲学内涵。In chapter 13 of The Doctrine of the Mean,Confucius says,"Dao is not far from people. "The Yong is interpreted in two ways: the common and the function. Following the principle of interpreting Confucian Classics by referring to texts of Classic,the essence of the notion "Dao being not far from people"includes the following points at least. Firstly,"Dao"refers to humanity. Secondly,the theoretical foundation of"Dao being not far from people"is that"the spontaneous nature is Dao". Thirdly,Dao cannot be left anytime in the practice of rites. Fourthly,from a practical viewpoint,the notion "being far from people"has two levels of meaning: oneself and others. The classical interpretations of Zheng Xuan,Kong Ying-da and Zhu Xi are not flawless. Relating with the first chapter,this chapter uncovers the Edification Philosophy of Confucian of fulfilling Dao by oneself,practicing loyalty and forgiveness energetically and considering others in one’s own place.
