摘 要:度量衡兹事体大,既为科学之最常用术语,又与日常生活密切相关。20世纪30年代,社会各界曾针对度量衡译名统一问题展开激烈论战,论战的焦点并非简单的翻译策略问题,也即从音还是从义的简单选择,亦非译名统一问题,抑或音译名称与比附名称的简单对峙,而是重实用或重学理、崇法令或尚科学、尊传统或求革新等多方力量的胶着与抗衡。彼时的度量衡论争充分显现了科学发展历程中,由制度划一到名称划一,由科学社会化到社会科学化的过渡与迈进,从而助推科学研究和社会生活从无序到有序的发展。可以说,度量衡译名论战既是传统“正名”思想的传承与表征,亦是其时科学精神追寻和科学规范建构的典型与缩影,是民国时期社会知识生产的表征。The measuring system, as the basics of science, is closely linked with the daily social life. In the 1930 s, suggestions to change the accepted acceptable translation of measuring names ignited a lively controversy with numerous arguments and tactics. Essentially, choosing between transliteration and free translation is a counterbalance between practical use and scientific principle, law and science, tradition and innovation, rather than a simple translation issue. It implies that both scientific study and social life have been gradually standardized, as a result of the progression from scientific system to scientific names and from socialized science to scientific society. In this way, arguments over the names of the measuring system in the 1930 s display how knowledge was produced by establishing scientific principles and senses in modern China while also mirroring the wisdom of ancient China’s Rectification of Names.
