It is wrong to translate the English sentence “What it is”into a Chinese one that literally means “It exists as what”. The wrongness of the translation is obvious, though its cause complicated,as many problems are involved such as the copulative use and non-copulative use of the word “being ”,the correspondence between its noun and verb, and, above all,the wrong view set up for a long time in China to translate Being into CUNZAI( existence). It should be pointed out that the meaning of the noun “being”comes mainly from its verb and it should be understood in its usual sense of copula, though sometimes it does have an use of non-copula. The Chinese word CUNZAI,as a translation of Being, eliminates thoroughly its copulative meaning, misleading our understanding and bringing difficulties into our research of Western philosophy. This wrongness of translation must be recognized and its cause should be brought to light.
