Run-on sentences retrieved from English essays written by freshmen and sophomores in colleges and universities are noteworthy syntactical errors. These run-ons are frequently produced by using commas instead of proper conjunctions to combine separate independent sentences and can be classified into seven specific categories with distinct features. There are corresponding syntactical methods to modify run-ons, but more importantly, the analysis of the causes of the high frequency of run-ons are more crucial, among which is the interference of Chinese. Hence, there is a certain necessity to enhance proper understanding of cohesions and coherence in English and to introduce thematic progression patterns to help the English writing of Chinese college learners.
