Seeking the Root: Research on the Essence of Higher Education for 40 Years

摘  要:高等教育学科建立40年来,高等教育本质研究大致形成了“人才培养说”“文化本质说”两类主流观点。采用“历史考察法”“教育本质推演法”“学科语境阐释法”三条主要路径,产生了“高等教育本质与教育本质是否一致”“高等教育的本质是变化的还是不变的”“高等教育的本质是一元的还是多元的”三个重要争论,出现了将高等教育“内涵”“本质观”“属性、性质和特性”“目的、价值和功能”误解为高等教育本质的四种倾向。观点的转向与路径的拓展呈现出高等教育本质认识的流变,争论与误解则源于认为本质不言自明的偏见。未来应给予高等教育本质研究应有的重视,并通过高等教育现象进一步寻找本质,同时承认在哲学视阈下探寻高等教育本质的合理性。Since the establishment of the higher education discipline in the past 40 years,the research on the essence of higher education has formed two mainstream viewpoints,which are“talent cultivation theory”and“cultural nature theory”.The two mainstream viewpoints adopt three main approaches including“historical investigation”,“deduction of educational essence”and“interpretation of subject context”.It has produced three important debates:“Whether the nature of higher education is consistent with the nature of education”,“whether the nature of higher education is changing or unchanged”and“whether the nature of higher education is monistic or pluralistic”.It also has four tendencies of misunderstanding“connotation”,which take“view of essence”,“attribute,nature and characteristics”,“purpose,value and function”of higher education as its es⁃sence.The transformation of viewpoint and the expansion of approach show the change of the understanding of the nature of higher education.What’s more,the controversy and misunderstanding result from the prejudice that the nature is self-evident.In the future,more attention should be paid to the research on the nature of high⁃er education through the phenomenon of higher education.At the same time,the rationality of exploring the es⁃sence of higher education from the perspective of philosophy should also be recognized.
