摘　　要：“白璧德与杜威之争”往往与其各自弟子在中国展开的论战不无关系。知识界不乏详细论及杜威与胡适的师生情谊、白璧德与各弟子的因缘际会的著作或文章,却鲜有就“白璧德杜威之争”与“胡适和白氏弟子之争”的关系发问且进行深入探究的作品问世。本文将从“白璧德杜威之争”的源头出发,探究以下这三个问题:1)白璧德究竟是在何时将批评的矛头对准杜威的2)白璧德将批评矛头对准杜威与白氏弟子在中国与新文化派开展论战有何关系3)面对白璧德的攻讦,杜威作何反应?本文试图通过梳理“白璧德杜威之争”在美国现代思想界的重要位置以及“白璧德杜威之争”与“胡适和白氏弟子之争”之间相互生发的关系,挖掘新文化运动时期中美文化交流互动的重要议题。"The Dispute between Irving Babbitt and John Dewey"is often related to the debates waged by their respective disciples in China.We now have many books and articles discussing the relationships and interactions between Dewey and Hu Shi and between Babbitt and his disciples,but few works focusing on the relationships between"Dewey's dispute with Babbitt"and"Hu Shi's dispute with Babbitt's disciples in China".This article examines the origin of the"dispute between Irving Babbitt and John Dewey"by discussing the questions of when Babbitt took Dewey as his target in criticism,how Babbitt's critique of Dewey was connected with his disciples in China and how Dewey reacted to Babbitt's criticism,so as to explore the significant issues in cultural interactions between China and America in the New Culture Movement.
