How Does the Image of a Painting Narrate?——On Norman Bryson's Theory of the Relationship Between Word and Image

摘  要:语词与图像的关系是当下艺术理论的一个热点话题,引发了学者们的广泛关注和讨论。布列逊的语图关系理论作为其中的一种重要声音,不仅揭示了语词与图像之间是一种互动的关系,而且阐明了绘画的图像作为一种文化意指实践是如何与语言相互交织的。根据布列逊的研究,绘画的图像包含形象和话语两个层面:第一个层面通常会从再现视觉经验的角度来加以解释,而第二个层面则需要从符号表意的角度来加以考察,以探明图像借助语言来进行叙事、表意的机制和原理。既包含形象又包含话语的特性,使得绘画的图像介于再现与表意之间,从而对社会文化具有了双重建构功能。The relationship between word and image is a hot topic in contemporary art theory,which has triggered extensive attention and discussion among scholars.As one of the important voices,Bryson's theory of the relationship between word and image not only reveals that the relationship between word and image is an interactive one,but also elucidates how the image of a painting,as one of signifying practices,is intertwined with language.According to Bryson's research,the image of a painting contains both the figural and the discursive:the first level is usually interpreted in terms of reproducing visual experience,while the second level needs to be examined from the perspective of semiotics in order to explore the mechanisms and principles by which the image draws on language to narrate and represent.The characteristic of containing both the figural and the discursive makes the image of a painting between representation and signifying practice,and thus has a dual constructive function on society and culture.
