摘　　要：本文探询了该小说四个主要人物的象征意义。丁梅斯代尔、海丝特、齐灵渥斯和珠儿象征着表达错综复杂的人的不同方面，丁梅斯代尔象征着人的宗教性的一面，海丝特象征着人的天性一面，齐灵渥斯象征着清教主义伦理道德以及由此而衍生的道德观念，珠儿是经过充分发展后的未来的完美的人。剖析了各自其象征意义本身的矛盾性，并揭示了这一现象的深刻思想根源。The Scarlet Letter , as the masterpiece of Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the most famous novelist during the American Renaissance period, is well-known for its high-level adoption of symbolism. In the paper, the rich symbolisms of the four protagonists in the novel： Hester Prynne, Arthur Dinunesdale, Roger Chillingworth, and Pearl, is analyzed and such conclusions are got. All the four protagonists respectively symbolize different and sometimes contradictory aspects of the current human body in the society in Hawthorne＇s eyes and the complexity of the symbolism reflects the similar viewpoints of Hawthorne on such issues.
