摘　　要：本文探索多义词的语义扩展模式。以往研究多局限于历史和社会等外在动因,而直至认知语言学的出现,语义扩展的内在机制才逐渐被揭示出来。本文描述了两种语义扩展的内在机制——隐喻和转喻。以往对"死"这一概念的词汇多义性关注较少。因此,本文从认知角度探讨英语形容词"dead"的词义扩展过程。This paper aims to explore the working mechanisms of semantic extension of polysemous words. Traditional studies focused on historical and social reasons. However,it is cognitive linguistics that brings into light underlying working mechanisms of semantic extension. Two cognitive working mechanisms—metaphor and metonymy are analyzed in this paper. Attention paid to the polysemy of lexical items of＂death＂is little. Therefore,the paper chooses the English adjective＂dead＂as the case study to investigate how its senses are extended cognitively.
