摘 要:本文探讨专门用途英语在中国大学的实施和发展前景。首先基于参考文献,试图对EAP与ESP的课程内涵进行释义,以澄清两者在意义上的划界。同时就当前中国学生英语课程通用英语(General English)或专门用途英语(English for Specific Purposes)的并存关系做进一步阐述。此外,针对高校专门用途英语的教学现状做出基本概述,并基于以学生为中心的教学理念,提出建设性的ESP组织教学。希望教师以对专门用途英语等教学理念的正确理解为基础,提高自身的学术文化、学术语言、学科知识等方面的底蕴,不断拓宽职业发展,改进我国大学外语教育的教学功效。This paper addresses the issue of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in China. It strives to elucidate the differences between EGP (English for General Purposes) and ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses under the frame of EAP ( English for Academic Purposes). Although ESP is designed to fulfill students' different language learning needs at the tertiary level, unfortunately, it has often been criticized for not fully serving the purpose. So it is essential that this issue be given discussion space. Failing to clarify the questions weakens our potential effectiveness as teachers, thus creating confusion about the goals of ESP itself. It is suggested that philosophical and technical empowerment of the teachers and commitment to student-centered learning for heightening their communicative competency in the very field of specialization are the priority in the ESP course.
