摘 要:我国有关霍克思《红楼梦》英译全本的翻译批评至今已有四十多年的历史,新世纪随着西方新兴翻译理论的东进,尤其是意大利裔美国翻译理论家韦努蒂归化异化理论的影响,霍克思及其《红楼梦》译本遭到了越来越多的质疑,陷入了众说纷纭、褒贬不一的怪圈。其根本原因在于我国译论者忽视"归化"概念的中西差别,在进行翻译批评时混淆传统归化概念与韦努蒂特定论域中推出的归化概念,从而造成评价混乱。传统语言学视域中的归化是翻译过程中不可避免的部分,它与文化霸权意识并不存在必然的联系;韦努蒂后殖民视域中的归化理论却将二者紧密联系在一起,过于牵强。该理论自身存在的漏洞更使基于其上的译评结论岌岌可危。As new western translation theories, especially Laurence Venuti's Domestication/Foreignization theory, are gradually intro- duced in China at the turn of the 21st century, the criticism of David Hawkes and his translation of The Story of the Stone has been questioned, falling into a vicious circle besieged by divided opinions and varied judgments. The main cause of this dilemma is the ignorance of our translation critics of the Sino-western differences of the concept "Domestication". They, in translation criti- cism, confuse the already-known traditional concept in China with that one newly promoted by Venuti in West, which surely leads to the chaos in the evaluation of translations. For domestication in our traditional concept is just an unavoidable process in transla- ting, which actually has nothing to do with cultural hegemony consciousness. While in Venuti's theory, domestication and cultural hegemony consciousness have purposedly and forcedly intertwined. Furthermore, the loopholes found in Ventui's Domestication/ Foreignization theory itself much more place the critics' conclusions in jeopardy.
