摘　　要：赫钦斯是美国著名的高等教育思想家、改革家,其一生都致力于通识教育的改革与实践。赫钦斯通识教育思想的产生有其特定的社会历史文化背景,他认为通识教育的目的在于人的理智的培养;经典的西方名著是永恒学习的内容;通识教育的实施不仅有利于个人的全面发展和社会的团结与进步,而且可以为专业教育奠定共同的学术基础。他的通识教育理念不仅对芝加哥大学课程设置产生了重要影响,而且在圣约翰学院得以真正实现。Hutchins is a famous American higher education thinker and reformer.The whole of his life is devoted to the reform and practice of general education.His idea of general education has its particular social,historical and cultural background.He thinks that general education aims to cultivate human rationality;Western canonical books are the eternal learning content;general education will not only benefit individual all-round development and social unity and progress,but also lay the common academic basis for specialized education.His conception of general education has important influence on the curriculum of the University of Chicago and has been actualized at Saint John’s College.
