《浮生六记》林译本共轭意象翻译的认知探讨

摘　　要：《浮生六记》作为中国传统文本富含共轭意象,即采用双意象喻示同一概念。英语讲究分析,依赖形合,而中文注重整体思维,追求音韵和谐,具有意合特征。因此,与英文相比,中文对共轭意象比较青睐。《浮生六记》中的共轭意象从认知角度可以划分为隐喻和转喻。林语堂在翻译过程中倾向于保留共轭隐喻、舍弃共轭转喻,对此可以从认知角度予以阐释。隐喻旨在描述,属于跨域相似性映射,所以内涵复杂多元;转喻重在指称,属于同域相邻性激活,所以内涵明确单一。有鉴于此,如果在译文中保留共轭意象,隐喻效果可以有所增强,而转喻效果却会有所削弱。透过林译《浮生六记》可以发现隐喻转喻认知机制对林语堂翻译共轭意象具有潜在影响。As a classic work of Chinese literature,Six Chapters of Floating Life displays a collection of image juxtaposition,namely,adopting a couple of images in reference to one and the same concept.While English is based on analysis and hypotaxis,Chinese language is marked with the collective thinking style,the preference for balance and rhythm and the parataxis of grammar.This creates a favorable environment for the abundance of image juxtaposition.Cognitively,the juxtaposed images in Six Chapters of Floating Life fall into two categories：metaphor and metonymy.In the course of translation,Lin Yutang retains nearly all metaphorical juxtaposed images,but drops most metonymical juxtaposed images.This can be explored cognitively.Metaphor is based on cross-domain mapping,cognitive similarity and its chief function is to describe.It follows that metaphor is essentially complex and multi-dimensional.Metonymy,on the other hand,is based on within-domain activation,cognitive contiguity and its chief function is one of reference.Therefore,metonymy is fundamentally definite and single-dimensioned.Juxtaposed images,if transferred into the target language,will enhance the effect of metaphor,yet undermine the effect of metonymy.The respective mechanism of metaphor and metonymy,as the Lin-translated Six Chapters of Floating Life shows,has a potential influence on Lin Yutang.
