Based on philosophical ideas such as subjectivity and intersubjectivity, this paper explores the subjectivity of dictionary-makers as well as the intersubjectivity related to them in bilingual dictionaries. Through the comparison and analysis of the translation of entry words, this paper focuses on the compiler’s subjectivity and the intersubjectivity involved in the headword translation of five mainstream Chinese-English dictionaries published in China. This paper argues that the process of offering translations in Chinese-English dictionaries is the construction of intersubjectivity around the equivalence of meaning. The subjectivity of compilers not only promotes the formation of heterogeneities of translation styles of Chinese-English dictionaries, but also may lead to errors, gaps and omissions. The subjectivity and intersubjectivity of compilers have two implications for improving the translations in Chinese-English dictionaries: the formation of a sense of subjectivity and establishment of effective intersubjectivity.
