摘　　要：有人说翻译以直译为主,有人说以意译为主.分析几种流行的翻译教程对这两个名词的论述,表明分歧出于各家所指不尽相同.但更重要的原因在于这两个名词在定义和概念上存在严重波动的问题.实际翻译究竟是以直译为主,还是以意译为主,难以做出简单的回答.根本原因在于,翻译方法取决于翻译目的、对象和语篇类型.Some textbooks say that most translations are literal translations while others maintain most translations free ones. An analysis of several textbooks shows that, their concepts of literal and free translations are not the same, though they use the same terms. And the differences come more from the fact that there are serious problems of definitions and fluctuations in concept. To answer this question, one must make a concrete analysis of practical problems concerned, since translation strategies are decided mainly by purposes and receptors of translation, and the text type to be translated.
