摘  要:从审视大学英语教学现状入手,阐述整体语言教学思想,探讨在研究生英语课的教学中,开展主题讨论教学活动,培养语言交际能力的问题。As advanced EFL learners, postgraduates of non-English majors regard the acquisition of communicative competence as their most important and urgent goal of English learning. Then, how can English teachers help them achieve their goal? This paper first analyses the disadvantages of the traditional teacher-centered teaching style which emphasizes the input of discrete language points but provides few opportunities for learners to practice language production. It then probes into the fundamental principles of whole language teaching to seek for strategies to improve the teaching of English to postgraduates. Hypothesizing that learners' active participation in classroom activities is a major way to the acquisition of communicative competence, the paper finally expounds on the design and adoption of thematic classroom discussions.
