摘　　要：根据格赖斯的理论,将话语意义分为自然意义和非自然意义,探讨认知因素在英语阅读理解中的应用:自然意义方面涉及猜测词义、解歧、抽象名词结构的语义具体化;非自然意义方面涉及含义、比喻义、象征义的理解。According to Grice,this article classifies two kinds of utterance meaning:natural meaning and nonnatural meaning,and then probes into the application of cognitive factors in English reading comprehension accordingly. Meaning guess of new words, ambiguity resolution and meaning specification of abstract noun structures are discussed as strategies to grasp natural meanings, and the construction of implied meanings, metaphorical meanings and symbolic meanings are critical to the understanding of nonnatural meanings.
