The present study investigates the use of modal verbs in Chinese-English government press conference (GPC) interpretation based on the latest version of Chinese-English Conference Interpreting Corpus ( CECIC 3.0). The result shows that compared with the original English (OE) at the U.S. GPCs, the Chinese-English GPC Interpretation displays an overuse of strong modals (will, shall, should and mu^t) and an underuse of weak modals ( would, might, and could). Incidentally we find that the contracted forms of will and would, i.e. 'll and 'd, are remarkably underused in the interpreted English (IE) texts. In terms of the modality type, there is an overuse of deontic modals and an underuse of epistemic modals in the IE texts. This paper proposes that the distinctive patterns of the use of modal verbs in the Chinese-English GPC interpretation can be explained by the tenor difference between the Chinese GPC and the U. S. GPC texts, the implicit nature of the Chinese grammar, and the interpreter's subiectivitv.
