“Enlightenment”or“Entertainment”: The tension in science fiction translation in Late Qing Dynasty as viewed in the translation of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea

摘  要:"小说界革命"在对待小说文体方面存在悖论,很难调和文学救国的"启蒙"功用和小说的"消闲"本义之间的矛盾,这势必影响到域外小说译介。本文以《海底旅行》为个案,考察这一悖论对晚清科学小说翻译策略的影响。研究发现,在具体翻译过程中"启蒙"并未体现在保留原作的"科学知识",而是人为地增添政治言论,这必然与小说的消闲本义相悖,译者只能通过插科打诨弥补缺憾。由此,域外科学小说并没有达到"开启民智"的明显功效,而是出现了译者在"启蒙"和"消闲"之间摇摆不定的尴尬局面。There is a paradox in'Revolution in Fiction'advocated by Liang Qichao,being unable to reconcile the contradiction between the parts that a fiction plays: 'enlightenment'or 'entertainment',which is certain to exert an influence on fiction translation. In order to demonstrate the influence of the 'paradox'on science fiction translation,this paper takes the translation of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea as a case study and discovers that enlightenment is manifested in the addition of the political views rather than scientific knowledge transferred through literal translation of the fiction,which naturally contradicts the entertaining part that a fiction should play,and that in this case,the translator normally makes up for this loss by adding buffoonery. Hence,the translation of science fiction fails to play the part of enlightenment,and the translators are situated in an embarrassing situation: to enlighten or to entertain.
